Stop it With the Pandemic!

Stop.

Just stop.

I read the news too. I watched the Prime Minister and the President speak. Every single day.

I’ve also seen Facebook / Twitter / Instagram. I also have a friend of a friend who has a 3rd cousin who has it.

The pandemic is important and it’s going to hurt a lot of people. It already has from what I can see just from the normally bustling restaurant across the street. It’s probably going to get worse and sadly for some of our most vulnerable.

I’m not in control. For most of my life I have been. I’ve gotten to pick my job, business plan and budget and not least of all strategy.

For the next while though it’s time to rethink what that means. I am in control of how I interact with my colleagues and our business partners. Life can’t stop. We’re all meant to be socially distancing. Really? Let’s try again. 3 things we’re doing:

  1. We’re having a morning coffee. 9 – 9:15am. Everybody gets on Zoom and we all have coffee. It means I have to put on a shirt and make small talk. Even if it is just sharing memes.
  2. We’re having a drink on Friday at 4:30. Turns out it’s BYOB (having a Corona was only funny the first 3 times FYI). For an hour we’re all going to chat about how we’re going to spend our weekends. Spoiler alert – I’m going to do my taxes on time this year.
  3. We’re being more forward with potential clients. Now more than ever it’s a good time for a distraction and things which reorient us to the problems we can solve. Most of us have a bit of extra time in the moment thanks to a lack of a commute. Let’s talk while we can do a Zoom call in our PJ’s. Let’s talk about how things can be better when we get back to normal.

Let’s be real. Nobody wants cash going out the door right now. Walking in to (or more accurately Zooming) your CFO asking for extra budget could be described as ‘career limiting’.

What we can do though is have the conversation. We can listen. We can make our product better. We can give it to our clients for free for as long as we need to until they can buy it, demonstrating value. We can use this time to make our business and our customers stronger in the long term.

That’s how we’re spending this time.

Let’s focus together on how to make things better when we’re back to normal.

Take care of yourself and those around you,

On the upside according to someone on the internet my toilet paper supply is good for 76 days. (Only?!?)
